at thanksgiving we have a traditional turkey dinner, with all the trimmings,,,wine, real hand embroidered linen, silver silverware (and its polished days in advance), crystal stemware, beautiful china, candles. its around 2:00.
at christmas we have a buffet with veggies and dip, chips, all kinds of sliced meats, cheeses, different breads, cookies, candy, and name your poison for the drinks. this dinner is around 5 and we play cards afterwards.
we all prefer christmas!

Never, a couple of years ago I started a tradition where everyone brings a side dish.
It's great and you get the best of their cooking to feast on, no big mess and everyone enjoys the holiday.
I never tell them what to bring, being surprised is the best part.
