there are a few knots you can do.
1- the Windsor Knot (for wide-spread shirt collars)
-start with the wide end of the tie on your right hand and extending about a foot below the narrow end.
-cross the wide end over the narrow and bring it up through the loop fro the back side.
-bring the wide end down, around, behind and then up on your right.
-push it threw the loop (hole) forward, bringing it go down, then bring it all the way around accross the front and back up threw the loop (hole) on the back side.
-complete it by slipping it down through the knot in front.
-Tighten and draw it up snug to the collar.
as a side note. GQ mag. suggests that the front of the knot should have a "dimple" or small rinkel at the base of the knot whenit is tightened.
2- the Half-windsor knot (for standard shirt collars)
-start with the wide end of the tie on your right and extend a foot below the narrow end.
-cross the wide end over to the left and then come back under the thin side toward the right.
-bring the fat end up in front and then down threw the loop (hole) comming out the back side.
-pass the wide end around the front from the left to the right.
-then go back up on the back side pushing it threw the loop (hole) and down through the knot in front. Tighten carefully and draw up to the collar.
-note that the same sugestion applys from GQ Mag.
there is also a knot called a "four in hand knot" and a bow tie knot.

It's hard to explain you might have to try it a few times to remember it, and book mark the page or website you learn it from because its easy to forget if you don't do it a lot.
