Good thought but it might be a little late since most of the charity organizations already have staff. You can try calling one in the morning (like a local soup kitchen or church). Another good idea would be to start calling next week about volunteering for Christmas

There tends to be an outpouring of resources and effort at Thanksgiving and Christmas, often to the point of volunteers tripping over each other. While I don't want to discourage you from an hour or two or work at a soup kitchen, if you really want to impact your community, commit to volunteering regularly throughout the year.

For a specific organization, it allows the organization to more efficiently schedule and apply your gifts, you become familiar with the staff and other volunteers, and the organization doesn't have such boom and bust times of the year for volunteers.

For yourself, it becomes more than a fleeting once a year, relieve the guilt experience. It doesn't have to be at a single organization every month/week, etc. Until you find a regular volunteer task, you could just write on the calendar that you will find a suitable community service task on a regular basis, such as the 4th Saturday of every month, every other Wednesday night, etc.

Let your gifts be appreciated throughout the year!

Go to your nearest church or shelter that is serving the free dinner and tell them you want to help them in any way. They will have you wipe tables, take out garbage, do some pots and pans.

Go to your nearest dept. store that has hours on Thansgiving and buy some inexpensive throws - those little blankets- about 5-7 bucks each and take them to a nursing home and tell the staff you found them on sale and want to give them to a few residents. They will take you into a room and say this is so and so and this person has a little gift for you. You will chat a little bit and it's nice to do. It will of course be under the supervison of staff as they don't know you.

If you have a god belief go to church many have T-day services and just do your thing spiritually and thank your god.

If you don't have a god belief think about and focus on those who have nothing and then think of them as having what they need. Positive thoughts can never hurt.

If nothing else just spend the day alone and be happy for everyone you know.

You could also check out local Charity organizations, like Red Cross, or check with local Restaurant owners who are serving out free meals to seniors, homeless and people who just can't afford a good meal. Meals on Wheels is a good bet. Also, local Senior communities or centers. And let's not forget those who are stuck in the Hospitals. A friendly face visiting with them would help, especially those who are terminally ill, like children with cancer.

Salvation Army or a hospital or a nursing home. Just show up and ask if you can help. Happy Thanksgiving!

If you drive and know your town well,,,the salvation army or the Feed my Sheep,,,charity Thanksgiving dinners,,,,always need drivers to take meals to shut-ins. They always have enough volunteers for the kitchens but are usually short of drivers....nice of you to want to help. If you don't drive, you may be able to help pack the dinners...Just ask..

Look up "soup kitchen" on Google in your closest major city. And consider helping out all year long - not just on the designated help-out day.

Find the nearest shelter/soup kitchen (they are usually easy to find if you search online, etc) and go help serve food. It means SO much to the people in shelter! Good man!
