Shoes off means SHOES OFF.
It's about not tracking in the dirt from outside. If he can't hang with walking barefoot, he can either bring some socks, or keep his butt outside.

well you suppose to respect that person's wishes since it is there house. But to me I don't see the big deal because flip flops are not like shoes. Now if I've just vacuumed or his flip flops or dirty, then the shoes have to go.

I would probably prefer that he took his shoes off... They're just flip flops, it's not that hard to put them back on again.

A rule is a rule and in every house there is a rule and every person should respect it....no exception for house rules..even if he is your closest encounter....tell him that but do it all in subtle way, don't fight him or argue with him , use terms of endearment though firm and consistent and that you are serious and you meant business really..........after all it is your home and besides he will like that because you are a house proud.. a neat and tidy lady!!!

make him take them off leaving him to walk in his bare feet.
@ Malaysia, its rude to wear shoes in the house, specially someone else's house.

While I would prefer that he take them off in my house, the thought of his bare sweaty feet traipsing all over my floors would revolt me even more so he needs to either leave socks or slippers at your house to change into.

Make him take them off and buy him his own special pair of slippers that he can wear so that he doesn't have to walk around barefoot.

I would rather he left the flip flops on. I wouldn't want his nasty bare feet on mt carpet leaving athletes foot or something worse on my carpet.
Yuck

If it were up to me, all shoes would be removed @ the door.
When we moved here, I actually campaigned *hard* for a no-shoes policy indoors, but my SO thought it was stupid (now he kinda wishes he's thought it through a bit better).
