In math exponents take precedence, so what you are saying the same as:
-1 * x² = 4

If you divide both sides by -1, you get:
x² = -4

Take the square root of both sides and you have:
x = sqrt(-4)

x = sqrt(4) * sqrt(-1)
x = ±2i

it depends on what level of math you are taking.

x^2= - 4

In highschool math, you would not be able to solve this problem because you're told you can't take the square root of a negative number.

However, in higher level math you deal with "imaginary numbers" and the answer would be + 2i and -2i.
where i^2 = -1
