You could make the case for 'Easy Rider' from somewher around 1969. Its a rather pointless but interesting film which has evolved into an icon. It tracks the adventure of two 'hippies' (for lack of a better term) who set off across the country on motorcycles, but meet with ill fate primarily because of their identity as 'hippies'.

You might also make a case for 'Braveheart'. it is the story of a revolt against oppressive government power.

Truth be told, Hollywood does not care for that story line so it is rare...

It's an old movie, but "The Fountainhead" was precisely what you are looking for.

Look it up on IMDB.com. Here's what the reviewer said about it:

"Individualistic and idealistic architect Howard Roark is expelled from college because his designs fail to fit with existing architectural thinking. He seems unemployable but finally lands a job with like-minded Henry Cameron, however within a few years Cameron drinks himself to death, warning Roark that the same fate awaits unless he compromises his ideals. Roark is determined to retain his artistic integrity at all costs. Written by Col Needham {col@imdb.com} "
