I have had a hernia just under the right rib for over15 years. A few years ago I went to a specialist and he was angry for me bothering him. He thought I should ignore the hernia since it had been there so long. Now, the area of the hernia is so sticking out and makes me look heavier than I am. First, does a hernia weigh much and can it make me swell to make my stomach stick out too? Am I wrong to want it removed? Am I too old (60) to have it removed? Please tell me that the hernia weighs 40 pounds so I can have an excues for my weight. Can you help?

Yes. Some bosses have them when you are running late on a project.
Not to make light of your problem! If a doctor acts like that, go get a new doctor. Doctors are supposed to be compassionate and that one was not. You have a right to be "well" and if hernia removal will do that, then they should advise you the best way to go about dealing with it. However, lots of times they will not do anything if they think it's just cosmetic, so you should let them know that the hernia is "painful, bothersome, etc" so they can work on relieving whatever symptoms/health problems the hernia is creating for you.
(You are NOT too old!)
And just because you are in a wheelchair doesn't mean that you are not concerned with your physical appearance. That "specialist" was a jerk!

Hi grannywi...Are you sure that what you are feeling is a hernia? Hernias don't cause people to gain weight, but tumors will. I would get a second opinion if I were you. An ultrasound is a quick way to differenciate a tumor vs. a hernia.

Have a safe journey!

i had a hernia when i was a little girl. My mom discovered because it was sticking out and you could touch it and it moves to another place under my belly button. I had it removed by surgery. I recommend to you to look for a another specialist by first going to your primary doctor so he/ she can reccomend one if it is possible to do it at such a young golden age(60).
