Hey, I wanted a lot of shortcuts on my desktop, so I directly opened the start menu and dragged them onto the desktop. Now I want all of the shortcuts on my desktop gone, but put back into the start menu. However, I don't know how to get all of the icons back onto the start menu, under the All Programs list with the folders. (I run Windows Vista, by the way, so I can't use the method for this on Windows XP.)

Yes, I tried to delete the shortcut, but the shortcut does not return to the start menu, meaning is not in the list of other programs in the programs list.

I found this at the Microsoft vista help site:
To restore Start menu default settings
You can restore the Start menu to its original, default settings.

1. Open Taskbar and Start Menu Properties by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Taskbar and Start Menu.

2. Click the Start Menu tab, and then click Customize.

3. In the Customize Start Menu dialog box, click Use Default Settings, and then click OK.
Hope it helps you. Let us know.

If the icons on your desktop are for shortcuts only all you have to do is right click the icon and select delete. It will tell you that it will only delete the shortcut and not the program. Click on yes and it should remove the icon and return it to the Start menu. It will not let you uninstall a program from the desktop, so don't worry too much. You can delete documents directly from the desktop do watch out for that.

I use XP. But do all the icons have the little arrows on them showing they are shortcut's? If so just delete them. BUT first check your Start Menu, are the programs still there? Yes? then delete them from the desktop.
