With the closing of I-10 in LA I'm looking for an alternate route from Atlanta to Houston. US-59 is also a mess north of Houston with its construction around Cleveland. So far I'm looking at I-20 all the way to Dallas and I-45 down, but that's an extra 200 miles! I'll be travelling over Thanksgiving weekend, and I'm willing to go out of my way a bit to avoid any snarls. I'm renting a 26' penske truck and towing a car, I have no experience with anything bigger than 14', so easier, higher standard roads are preferred. Any other decent US routes I might consider?

I did I-20 when 10 was closed up from Katrina, and although it is out of the way, it was WIDE open. Good clear highways and we averaged a decent speed back to Dallas. Sure it would mean a few more hours, but if you can't do I-10, that would be your next best bet. The smaller highways between 10/20 aren't worth the trouble. Too many stops. We tried that one way and opted for I-20 going back.

Dallas to Houston on 45 is also decent and wide open (but expect some construction/traffic around Conroe)

I-85 to I-65 to I-10 to I-12 (avoiding New Orleans) then back to I-10.

In Baton Rouge, detour north on I-110 to US 190 and go west to I-49 south back to I-10. Louisiana DOT is suggesting that route and its only a 29 mile detour. Looks like US 190 is all divided highway.
