According to Eric Partridge in his excellent book of word origins (Origins: A Short Etymological Dictionary of Modern English), "poop" comes from the Middle English word poupen or popen, and it originally meant "fart." The word was based on the sound of a fart. According to Robert Chapman, author of American Slang, "poop" came into use with its current meaning around 1900.

well the word starts off with "po" which is the food coming in. Then it ends with "op" which is the opposite of "po" but consists of the same stuff just like what comes out. So why is it not called boob? I don't know. But I know that it doesn't sound hot to say you have nice poops.

What a great question. That is a question that needs to be addressed. Now, when my grandsons were two, we would go in the back yard and scoop poop from the dog. We made up a song, I will share it with you. If you make a c.d., give me a little of the money. Ready?

i think it comes from the poop deck of a ship. not that i know what that is but... thats probably where it comes from...i think a lot of swear words and dirty words come from nautical terms or sailor slang. except as.s. that comes from the british word ar.se, which said with a british accent is pronounced ahs. ar.se? as.s? get it? :) why am i even talking about this?
