There are a few "disposal" methods that I know of. A lot of companies are now leasing equipment. At the end of the lease, the leasing company gets it back. They will refurbish and lease to someone else. Some of those also end up on eBay and other swap style listings. Another outlet is the staff of the company. They allow their own staff to purchase the equipment at a fair market value.

You can call you local universities and see if they have anything where they get rid of old equipment. I know that once every quarter the University in my city sells off a lot of equipment including PCs and laptops. Start talking to people about getting an older laptop. You may run into someone that has a side business. I just bought a laptop from a co-worker for $75. It has older software and is not very fast, but I can go online with it. I spent another $15 for a wireless card and off I go (or went in this case).

Good Luck!

The hospital I used to work for would donate their old stuff to shelters and public schools.
