Pure ignorance. That's all.
But laziness plays a big role because people are too lazy to care about learning proper grammar. Everyone is so concerned about other things (such as clothes, popularity, entertainment, and sex) that intelligence is becoming less and less important as the generations pass.

It's rather sad, really...

Not laziness. How much effort does it take to say then instead of than or vice-versa? Just ignorance. Most people actually don't realize the difference.

I think it's ignorance. People don't have a clue as to how to you the two words properly. I think that many people are unaware that they are two different words,or if they are aware of the two words, they have no idea of which is which. "Then" is to be used either as a time marker or with a sequence of events. "Than" is used in comparative statements.

I think it's ignorance. Much the same as when people constantly misuse the phrase, "I couldn't care less." I often see it, especially on YA, as "I could care less," which actually means you do care and quite a bit.

It can't be laziness because the two words are the same number of keystrokes. So it must be ignorance. I can't stand it either! The one that really gets under my skin is when people say "women" when they really mean "woman".

its ignorance, some people just cant tell the difference. This kind of stuff annoys the heck out of me!! I HATE with a passion when people say "i seen" instead of the proper "I saw" or even "ive seen" it just sounds so uneducated!! But people dont do it because they are too lazy to say the right word (proabably) but they just dont know its wrong.

It's good to see so many other people are annoyed by this, too. Thank you.

I'd say it's either ignorance or it's a "care factor" of nil, on the writers behalf.
They don't seem to realize that the meaning of the sentence changes.

"I'd rather have tea then coffee."
"I'd rather have tea than coffee."

In too big of a hurry I would say, But Than I could be more wrong then the rest of the answers! It took a lot of thought to use those two words wrong.

Maybe they're just retarded!LOL! I'm the smartest person in my class and I get annoyed when someone makes a mistake that most of the time seems to be only obvious to me. Everyone calls me a perfectionist.

Some people think that they mean the same thing, or don't know when to use which one. Some people will always use "then" and some will always use "than". It's mainly just people with limited English knowlegde really.
