I want to buy DVDs and send them to England as gifts - can they be played. Note cd from England play in US.

Probably not. US and Canada are Region 1 and Europe is Region 2. Unless the DVD says it can be played on all DVD players, it won't work. It should say on the back what region it is.

The U.S. uses NTSC format whereas the U.K. and Europe use PAL and SECAM. They won't play properly without a converter although you can get players with multi-format capability.
