It's pretty much accepted everywhere that prostitution is a bad thing, but what exactly is so bad or unethical about it? You could think of it just like any other service, like fixing a car. You pay, then you get service. What do you guys think?

I think outlawing prostitution takes away a legitimate income generator for some people, mainly women. If you look at the places where prostitution is legal (Amsterdam, Las Vegas) you don't see higher rates of STDs or divorces based on adultery. Anti-prostitution laws are just another case of a religious majority legislating morality and taking choices away from the public. My moral well being is my business, not the government's.

Wide-open topic here, but I'll put in my two cents- You've got theory, and you've got practice. In theory, if two people agree to have sex for a consideration, that's kinda between just those two people. So in theory, it might be fine.

But then you get to some very real downsides. Except for a few legal places in Nevada, it's illegal. Illegal everywhere means "unregulated." And that changes lots of things. How can you, the customer, know that the "service provider" won't give you more than you asked for, like disease? How can the provider be sure that the customer won't hurt her? Lack of regulation kinda changes things.

And let's don't forget that this involves sex. And sex is a hot-button thing. For many modern Puritans, it's difficult to discuss, let alone condone.

Those are a couple of "bad things" associated with prostitution. Are there more? Sure.

Now for the ethics. If you have no pressures on you to decide to participate, then at least you are in conformance with your personal ethics. But what if the prostitute is unable to earn money in more "normal" ways? Is it ethical to use her because she can't earn money in a better way? I think not. But what do you do ethically with the woman who has financial alternatives and decides for herself that this is how she wants to make money? IMHO, you'd have a difficult time finding such a woman. But it's possible.

So I'd have to say that the ethics are questionable, not clearly one way or the other, but prostitution is probably not certainly ethical.

In a perfect world, where all prostitutes are prostitutes by choice, all johns are using condoms and STDs aren't deadly, there's nothing so bad about prostitution. In the world we live in, many prostitutes are forced into the life, many times as children. No little girl thinks to herself, "I want to be a hooker when I grow up" Women end up in the life due to poverty, drug addiction, unhealthy/abusive relationships and other damaging circumstances. Child prostitutes are often illegal immigrants who are promised jobs in this country but when they arrive are imprisoned and forced to service clients.
There is no guarantee that a prostitute is "safe" even with a condom. With HIV and other diseases out there, every person who patronizes a prostitute is taking a huge risk, not to mention the risk to the prostitute herself.

It's not that simple. You could make the same argument with drugs: "You pay some money, maybe even money that you worked to earn, and you get a product." At some point, the government must draw the line when the overall health and moral well-being of the public are at risk. Think about how the spread of STDs would be affected if prostitution was legalized. Think about how many more families would be torn apart because a partner felt more comfortable about hiring a prostitute.

Prostitution is unethical, Though in many countries it is still legal. Also, it's the lowest thing a person can do. It's like you are good for anything except your body. Prostitutes are looked down upon and often in dangerous situations because of STDs, dangerous men, etc.

It encourages the spread of disease, can be detrimental to families, and in some cases is unethical. Some women that are prostitutes have been coerced into prostitution either by another individual or circumstances in their lives and so using their 'service' is really like taking advantage of them.

People who oppose prostitution think of sex as a sacred, bonding act. It's more than just another way of feeling good.

the main problem with prostitution, aside from sexually transmitted diseases, is the fact the religious fanatics don't get to share in the profits.
