How Do normal wooden incense burners work?

I think you are talking about the stick incense. The holders I have seen look kind of like a shoehorn. The incence is placed into a hole in the holder and the rest of the stick is held over the base. This catches the ashes as it burns. The cone type incence usually uses a brass holder.

you buy the long insence and put the wooden end in the lil hole and light the insence..=-)
