i dont think you need managers but you would fare better with them.
And to get more than 1 business u have to buy real estate using the phone
And it will take you ages.

Your sim can own as many businesses as you want them to own. Do they need a manager? It wouldn't hurt, but it's not necessary.
To get 5 top level businesses, you just have to get them to have the highest ratings. Great sales, great service, and lots of stars!

i would just use the cheat code "motherlode" by pushing "Ctrl and Alt and Delete" buy the business, then just do the best you can to get them to be 5 star.
