Guitar Hero game vs. package deal?

I am going to purchase Guitar Hero for the Wii for my son for Christmas. Since the set that includes the guitar is relatively expensive I was wondering if anyone cantell me how he could play the game with just his controller? It seems that he would be limited to just using the guitar for this game only. Is it worth spending the extra $60 or will the game alone work also?

In the little booklet that goes with the game, they do give instructions on how you can use the buttons on the Wii controller to play Guitar Hero. The problem is, some of the button combinations are near-impossible.

Spend the extra money and get the guitar controller.
