Campbelp could be right, but I think it's more likely that the expression you mean is "naked-eye star".

I think it refers to the core of a star that is left after the star explodes and throws off its outer layers.

Are you perhaps referring to a naked singularity? This would be a singularity that is not actively taking in matter and therefore would be very difficult to see... if not impossible.
