Don't - take a few lessons from a QUALIFIED teacher first - it will save you time and frustration.

Other than that, start hanging around guitar players - many will help a beginner get started - be sure to do something nice for them, too, like buy them lunch or something like that. Check the online videos of guitar teachers - there are plenty of introductory lesson videos available now for free online. A great book that covers a LOT of ground is "The Guitar Handbook" by Ralph Denyer (it may have been updated). It tells a lot about guitars, guitar players, and guitar music. It helps to have a REAL teacher in the beginning though so they can correct bad habits before they become bad habits. I also repeat get a QUALIFIED teacher - anyone can hang up a sign that says "guitar teacher", but some teachers are much better than others.
