I've lived both places for more than 20 years each and loved each place. Two main advantages for San Diego are 1) definitely better air quality, and 2) people less concerned with having money and status.

I don't think the traffic in San Diego is that much better than LA. At one time that was a big difference, but sadly for us in SD it is no longer that different.

I went to USC 2001-2005 and found that the many freeways there give you more choices. With San Diego, if you are going north, it's either going to be the 5 or the 15 or the 805. At least when you are in LA you have a lot more choices and therefore can figure out different ways to deal with traffic.

Advantages to LA include having the San Gabriel Mts so close; I love the Pasadena/Altadena area, the beach areas, downtown, Silverlake, the excitement of the area.

San Diego is more laid back, more of a feeling like you are on permanent vacation. I think it's probably prettier than LA (in some areas), certainly less pretentious.

Believe me that some people prefer LA.
A Few million for sure.
Otherwise they would move to San Diego.
