I am a student and currently live in Los Angeles and rent, my parents are buying a house by UF and said I could live there for free while I am studying (by myself, they live in the UK). I have never been there and would appreciate people's opinions of Florida, particularly Gainesville.
Thanks

I'm from Florida, and had many friends who went to UF (I'm a Seminole, but I'll still try to answer your question, lol).

UF is a really great school, it's had a very good reputation for a long time, and lately the academics have been becoming more impressive. Gainesville itself isn't that great. It is purely a college town, without much more going on. That's why I chose to go to FSU, since with it being the Capitol and all, there was a lot of interesting things going on all the time, as well as amazing internships and cultural events.

But, if you're like most typical college students, a college town offers everything you need. Rent is often quite expensive in most parts of Florida, so having a free couple years of living would be amazing. The best part about Gainesville is that you are an hour and a half away from Orlando, two hours from Tallahassee, and two hours away from Tampa. Here's to many great weekend roadtrips in your future, as well as lots of hot Florida college students!

I'm from Tampa, Florida but have also lived in Sacramento for 4 years. Personally, I like California better, but love Florida nevertheless. Gainesville is beautiful and the Florida beaches are absolutely amazing. Something I definitely missed while living in CA. The water was never warm enough. The cost of living in FL is lower than CA, although it has gone up considerably.

The hardest thing fo rme to get used to is thr almost year round humidity. Although CA is warm, the heat is much more tolerable. Why don't you contact the Tourist Center in Gainesville and request some information. Or maybe the college has a sponsor program where another student can help you along the way. I guess all in all, it is a tough decision and really depends on personal preference, but there are definitely millions of things to see and do in the Gainesville and surrounding area.

I have not been to that part of Florida. I currently live in NY, but I found your question appealing because I find myself thinking that I should leave NY.

Big cities (like LA and NY) mean high rents and higher expensives on EVERYTHING ELSE as well, which means, money is always tight.

I am not a student. I work for myself, and I make decent money, but things cost so much here, nothing is left over for saving.

And saving is what you start to think about, don't make the mistake I've made, try living in Florida rent free, and start saving your money.

If my rent wasn't so high, I'd have a good 30 or 40K socked away somewhere, but I don't. So go for it.

severe high quality climate?? Florida?? No, no longer happening except you like the sensation of sticky sweat a micro 2d after walking out of your door. I grew up there and stayed till i grew to become into 26 and the situation, extremely south east florida is a disgusting mess. a foul place to advance little ones and usual gruesome and trashy in some senses. if your chilly the place you're, evaluate something in between like the carolinas or georgia. in case you do pass there, id recommend coco sea coast area, stuart county, northern florida or west coast, which IMO is eye-catching yet nonetheless far too warm. Broward and Dade counties could be your worse possibilities.
