I have heaps of ancestors who share the same names - eg. 3 generations of "Theodorus Bouman"s, "Johanna Cathrina Bouman" and "Johannes Albertus Allis"s - why did parents use to love to name their children after themselves??

Also, whenever a kid died in my ancestor's families (as an infant) the next born kid would be given the same name. If that kid died too, the one after it would be given the same name. Why was that? Today people don't tend to do that - we like to think of all our kids as special individuals leaving behind a unique memory for their parents if they die.

I do a lot of genealogy, so I know something about naming customs. Especially in Scandinavia it was the custom to name children after their grandparents, so the same names were used at lot. It was important to preserve the names, not the individuals, since children were very likely to die before reaching adulthood.

These days naming children after their parents is caused mostly by lack of imagination, or so it seems to me.

All of this was the doing of heterosexuals.

It is called tradition..and it is not a bad thing...many name their children for a family member who they admire..hence so many Jr.s in the world. IT is not uncommon for a mother's maiden name to be the first name of a child. And let's face it, there are only so many names that do not cause problems down the road...wierd names that have to be spelled everytime you say them...not something I would wish on my kids. And also consider that if pop was successful, was well known, the son can only benefit from the name association. Goldwing

That's all very interesting but I'm not getting why this is in the LGBT section.
