Is this the modern way of England? Or is Englands "modern" days over? Will England become a team like.... Scotland or Wales? Is Englands reputation of "one of the best teams in Europe" over?

ENGLAND DID NOT BECOME A MEDIOCRE TEAM OVERNIGHT. PUT IT THIS WAY, OTHER TEAMS HAVE GONE PASSED ENGLAND WHILE IT IS EMBROILED IN A BIG MESS TO SORT OUT ENGLISH FOOTBALL.

IT'S A NO WIN SITUATION UNLESS THE FA START MAKING HARD DECISIONS, AND NOT FINDING THE MANAGER AS AN EASY SCAPEGOAT.

any English supporter who watched that fiasco must feel as deeply ashamed as i do, we now have a new reputation, as cowards, yes the first 2 goals knocked us down, yes in the second half we showed some bottle for a while, but why oh why did we start to drop back when we were at 2-2? it was clear we were going to lose that way, but still we had no guts in the team, it wasn't helped by Mclaren telling the team to drop back, still hopefully now he will be out of the way and another part of our dismal recent history. No wonder so many Scots were laughing at us, they just joined the rest of the football world, i am so glad that we are out, it would have been too embarressing to see them in a major tournament playing like that. I just wish we had half the passion of the Scots, the Irish or the Welsh. take care and good luck.

England have been substandard for a very long time. They have the players but put them together and they're all completely useless. It's the Media and the fans that hype the team and so the bigger they are the harder they fall. When the chips are down and they need a result they completely flop. Though admittedly it was a poor managerial decision to switch to a defensive style of play after the second goal.

Failing to qualify will have done them good. It's about time something deflated their egos.

I have lived in a few different countries and let me assure you NO ONE regards England as one of the best teams in the world except England. Thats not me just making that up its a fact. You are so caught up and brainwashed by the English media you soak it up like a sponge into believing your a cut above the rest. 1966 was over 40 years ago that doesnt make you one of the best in the world if it did wouldnt Uruguay be above you as they won it twice I believe.

Message to England....Dont believe the hype!!.

Let's look at the facts about the English team - one international championship, due in part to home field advantage. Does that qualify them as one of the world's great teams? Heck, that must mean Uruguay is twice as good as them. England has to become a team that consistently gets deep into international competitions, winning one every few chances. Then they might be considered great.

Au revoir, Mr. McClaren.

I'm applauding these answers b/c i think you guys are facing the facts now. I'm sorry the England team lost -- and can i just say the Scots are humble in their wins and losses - makes me proud to be Scottish.
Sorry guys - but why do the English fans boo the opposing teams National Anthem? hardly sportsmanship...

Sorry if the Scots were laughing at you john w --
it's good for a team to believe in their ability but when it turns into arrogance - it's not admirable..

The only Cup you ever won was at home with the old, heavy ball...
Your league is dominated by foreign coaches and players.
Your best talent is getting older and older.
And your new faces, while being hyped as the "baby Jordans" of English football, are starting to look more and more like Ralph Sampsons.

What rep are you talking about?

The sooner we in England realise that we are not a world class team, the better. We need to look at countries like Brazil and Italy, look at what they do, and use what they do to make our players better.

Being English doesn't make you a world class footballer, as tonight proves.
