A counselor will probably teach you strategies for decreasing and preventing your obsessions and/or compulsions. There are specific techniques that have been shown to be successful for this. They require practice, so don't be surprised if you get some "homework" - things that the counselor will want you do in between appointments.

At the first meeting, the counselor will likely ask a lot of questions. He or she will need to get a really good understanding of how your thinking works, so the best strategies for helping you can be used. The best strategy is to be honest with the counselor.

Sometimes medication is prescribed for OCD. That would be done by a doctor. OCD is a disorder that can respond well with treatment. While it may not completely go away, it can be managed so that it doesn't get in the way of things in your life.

Good luck!
