Let me give you the stats.

I'm 18 in college and i have a good job that pays good money. I'm from Oklahoma and i plan to visit my best friend in Georgia over Christmas break. I've been searching the internet for the cheapest travel. I came up with Greyhound which would cost me $108. Its a 20 hr trip.

The problem is that my parents(mom) thinks its too much time to spend on a bus, also mentioning the crazy people in the world. So she suggests flying. I've never been on one, and the cheapest tickect i've found was $248.

So you tell me which would be better..honest opinions

Flying would be better, if your parents are strong on this issue then tell then you will go via the plane if they pay the difference..the 140.00 bucks ;-)

If it was me I'd take the bus, but I'm cheap. Safetywise, neither you nor your mom should worry about the bus, its actually much safer than driving and I think safer than flying. The people on the bus are often poor, but most are normal, and even the wierdos are mainly harmless, and you're around lots of people so nothing much is likely to happen. Just stay in the depot if you stop somewhere like St. Louis!

The main thing is the bus can can be kind of a drag. Its slooow, the leg room is skimpy for tall people, and its a drag to wait in terminals for transfers, and stupid stuff sometimes happens like one bus is late, you miss the transfer and have to wait for the the next. Also its hard to sleep in those seats.

If you're patient, don't mind poor people, and can be entertained by a good book and scenery, it'll be OK. At the very least, by sticking to your guns, you may force your parents to pony up the extra for the plane.

I've taken a Greyhound. It sucked, but I didn't get robbed or raped or anything, the people were actually totally cool. You just talk and make friends and stuff... It was uncomfortable, and really hard to sleep... but it's a lot cheaper than flying. Tell mom if she's so uncomfortable with it, then she can pay the difference. I'd rather fly, but the bus is cheaper. And not as bad as everyone makes it out to be.

I can see your mum's opinion, she just wants you to be safe, and if it means less time travelling alone, then so be it. But if you're paying for the fare, then do what's best for you. If you think you'll be safe, and you can convince your mum that you'll be ok, then catch the bus. Maybe organise with your friend to meet half way and travel the last half together, or go with a mutual friend. This will help put your mums mind at rest.

Yeah, 20 hours IS long! However, the plane costs twice as much... For me, it would be worth it because I'd be irritated with the length of the trip. If you want to, and if it's available, you can check out the train. It's not too long, it's fun, comfy, and the prices are quite good!

I suggest you listen to your mom and fly.If you were travelling with at least one other person-that would be okay but you are alone and that's an awfully long trip.

Please take the flight. I took an eight hour bus trip and will never do it again. It was so uncomfortable. I couldn't lie back or anything. It was horrible. I would definitely take the flight.
