There were plenty of guards who ended up in Nam. At least he served instead of hiding at an english college like Clinton did. Historically you will note that there were many presidents who presided over a wartime government who never served a day in the military. Nationally only 10% of the population has ever or is actively serving in the armed forces. Just out of curiosity, what branch were you in.

yes, he likes to wear that flight jacket now, but couldn't do his time then. he is a sad man.

edit:babe and the rest who defend bush. the point here is that he did not complete his military time. he did not fulfill the entire 6 years. my brother did guard time in the viet nam era. they prosecuted individuals who did not do their time and dropped out. his daddy's connections kept him out of trouble.

No. Not at all. Many people did not want to go to that war, yet because we had a draft, many looked for and found alternatives. Bush included.

However today we have a volunteer army, and pretty much every single person in it knows they quite likely will be heading to Iraq or Afghanistan, yet they still join.

If there were still a draft, and many of those draftees did not want to go, then I would agree that Bush sending them would be hypocritical and/or ironic.
