NOT WITH THE ENGLAND TEAM. IN THEIR RESPECTIVE CLUBS, MAYBE. BUT DEFINITELY NOT FOR THE NATIONAL TEAM.

Yes but No!! Yes for playing football, but no because (I do not like it either) they can sell merchandise to the public. That is why Beckham is worth £25 mill, he can endorse a product such as hair gel and it will sell. Also the football kits and boots! So it is their marketing value which adds to the wages. Footnote Rugby League clubs cannot spend more on wages than the money that comes through the "Gates" IE what the crowd pay per week! There are ways around this though by giving them free accommodation, cars and bonuses etc

i really think they are over-paid and over-rated..taking into account what the yput back in to the game..there is probably exceptions to this but only a few...if you take a look at american baseball players- yes maybe you think they are overpaid too but the majority of them give a lot more back to there communities and to the fans of the sport..most of them give up a lot of there time to help and fund local charity events and schemes to help the poor and neglected areas. and also they give a lot more back to the general fans of the game.they give many interviews and chats to the media where as our footballers tend to shun the fans by giving token after game interviews for 5 mins and show no interest in doing more.i know some are indeed involved in some charity work but not to the same degree and time. i just think they should be giving a little more back into the sport and not acting like primadonnas which seems to be the case.

No - why shouldn't they earn what they do? They are paid according to what he clubs can afford, and if the fans don't attend matches and don't buy the merchandise the clubs wouldn't be able to offer the salaries.
It's a matter of choice - the players income doesn't come from the Civil List but is decided upon by the club owners. By the same token, if you work for Marks and Spencer you may earn more than the equivilant worker at Tescos. The level of salary is decided upon by the owners of the businesses.
To complain about footballers salaries is just jealousy.. you don't HAVE to attend matches and contribute to the wages of your team. You do, however, have to pay taxes and contribute to thee salary of the Government ministers, whether you voted them in or not! Now that IS unreasonable!

I think you are missing the point. Let me ask you something: do you like football? Have you ever paid to go see a match? Well, regardless, millions of people do. Those millions of people pay billions each year to see their favorite teams and players. So the clubs are making a lot of money. Why? Because of the players. If not for your favorite players, you wouldn't bother going. So where ELSE should all that money go? If not to the players, the owners will just pocket it. Best give it to the guys who work hard to produce the sport that so many of us love to watch.

Hi
I just wonder what you mean by "English" footballers, there aren't that many left, anyway football ceased to be a sport years ago, now it's just a business hence the wages of all concerned and the price of admission.

According to wikipedia, Rooney earns over £50, 000 a week, so obviously that is too much. But, you've got to remember their wages aren't controlled by the government, and the clubs are owned by wealthy people (most of the time).

Without a doubt, that includes the foreign player that play in the English Leagues, for many years this has destroyed the English game and put far more distance between those that can and those that cannot afford,.
I blame SkyTV and advertising, bring back the old days when most of the players actually came from the town/city they played for.

No.
Why English footballers?,
What about the rest of the top European leagues footballers?
Why don't you ask the same question about movie stars?,
Or musicians?
Or are the top 5% of footballers that earn these high wages just easy targets for the likes of people who ask questions like these?

The way the English played was like they deliberately didn't want to qualify.
A month on some exotic beach and 5-star hotel with their WAGs was obviously more tempting.
