It is a test to see if you are at risk for gestational diabetes.

Doctors do them different ways. Most common is to give you a little cup of a very sugary fluid (like super sweet soda) and then check your blood an hour later.

Yes, this makes some women feel ill - for two reasons. They make you fast for a long time before taking the liquid so you already feel weak and woozy. Then the surge of sugar can really be a shock to your system.

My midwife administers the test in the alternate way by letting you have breakfast and then measuring blood sugar levels after that. The results are just as accurate and you don't have the ill feeling and sugar crash.

You don't HAVE to take the test, by the way, but if you do the traditional sugar solution test take some food with you to eat right after they draw your blood.

A glucose test measures the amount glucose in your blood and it's done to check for diabetes, monitor treatment of diabetes, check for diabetes that occurs during pregnancy (gestational diabetes), or determine if an abnormally low blood sugar level (hypoglycemia) is present.

Normally you are not to drink or eat anything 8 hours prior to the test. At the doctors they will take some blood before the test afterward you are given a sugary drink. Two hours later your blood is taken again. The results take a couple of days. If it the glucose level is above normal or slightly above they will sometimes have you take a three hour glucose test to be sure. You take the same steps as in the two hour test only your blood is drawn three times: once before the test, once again at the two hour mark, and one last time at the three hour mark.

If you have gestational diabetes or you are on the borderline of it you will most likely be put on a diabetic diet. Insulin may also be given, but it can be avoided if you are on the diet and monitor your blood often.

You may feel a little weak after the test because of the fasting and high amount of sugar leaving your body. Just eat something after the test and you should feel fine.

You have to drink an orange liquid (tastes kind of like flat orange pop) and an hour later, they draw your blood. Be sure to eat and drink something AFTER your blood is drawn because your blood sugar tends to drop rapidly when the liquid starts to leave your system. It's best to try and keep your sugar leveled out by eating and drinking after the test is over.

But anyway, the test checks your glucose levels to find out if you have gestational diabetes.

it's a test for gestational diabetes, it takes about 3 hours, and you have to follow a strict diet per doctors orders for 3 days before the test. Typically the doctor will not let you leave the clinic until after the completion of the test, in case you have a reaction to orange liquid they make you drink

It didn't make me feel weird, but I got pretty hungry and had a headache from having to sit around waiting with all that sugar in my system. The actual drink itself isn't as bad as what a lot of people will tell you. Just be sure you don't eat lots of sugary things the day of the test and you should be fine.
