The part of a microscope that sends light through the stage is called the CONDENSOR. The diaphragm controls the amount of light that passes through the condensor.
Look up 'optical microscope' in wikipedis for a good diagram

There is a light bulb that makes the light, it is located usually right under the stage. The diaphram is a rotating disc with different size holes, that you can turn to let the right amount of light in.
