I start with the lights, about 10 strings, and then 4 strands of bubble lights. Then I use all the antique glass ornaments I have collected for 40 years, and all the ornmaments my kids have made, and the ones they have given me. Each year I add another glass ornament or two, sometimes purchased from a vacation or memorable event. My tree is very personal and connects me to all the Christmases I have ever celebrated.

My kids each pick a new decoration each year & they each have their own box to store them. Their own homemade ones are in there, too. As soon as the tree is up & the lights are on - they get their boxes out and put all their decorations on the tree - there's no need for anything else except the angel when they're done!

It starts with the lights...We use a single strand of plain white lights an wrap it around the trunk of the tree. Then we use colored strands to weave in and out of the branches. This technique adds depth to the lighting scheme, and a little extra twinkle as you move past the tree.

just the plain old ornaments make my tree extra special, ALL the ornaments on my tree have some significance, we have ornaments from every place my parents have traveled (all over europe, a few places in asia, a few made right here in puerto rico) and we have ornaments from our significant firsts (first christmas, first christmas while dad was at Iraq etc...)
I love the angel we put at the top of the tree, it's from Germany, very beautiful.

When the tree is decorated my son puts on the topper. A 13 year tradition.

Ha ha. I've been told my daughter is going to be "screwed for life" because we don't have a Christmas tree, but a Christmas Mabel. Mabel is my hubby's dummy that he uses to display his chainmail. Last year I hung the decorations on the chainmail, and Mabel held his two swords. This was to guard against greediness and make sure no one peeked when they shouldn't! Somehow I don't think that will really affect her development...

well my mom has this whole victorian themed christmas tree. with expensive glass ornaments. and since i live with her and i have babies she hasnt been able to do her christmas tree the way she wants. so this year we're doing 2 trees. so the kids will have their very own very colorful tree down in the family room and my mom will have her beautiful victorian tree in her living room.
