It really depends on how the car is going to be drove.
Firebird, High Performance I would buy the parts and do it myself. Never get a crank turned, you will want a Standard Crank, not a 10-10 or such it will not hold up to abuse.
If it is one that is not High Performance, Jasper rebuilders stand behind there engines.
One last tip if you are doing it Have it all Ballanced, it will pay for itself many times over.

Unless you are a trained mechanic that has experience and want to build a custom engine, a reman engine from a reputable source is usually cheaper than buying the individual parts and getting the machine work done. A tip....do not buy from Schuck's/Kragen or autozone. The rebuilders they use do a really poor job. Check with local shops that specialize in rebuilding as their main endeavor.

Most of the engines I install for my customers are low mileage salvage yard. Never had too many problems at all. The only aftermarket engines I'll use are Jasper. Their kits come with belts, hoses, spark plugs, wires, thermostat, gaskets, etc. All top quality stuff too. they are reasonably priced, well warrantied and as close to factory quality as any I've seen.

Remanufacured would probably be alot easier in the end. But it mostly depend on what parts your engine needs and how mechanically inclined you are. Many repairs are made much easier with a repair manual(ie. Haynes or Chilton).

If you have the experience and skill, do it yourself. A lot of remanufactured engines are pure junk that's "rebuilt" by a bunch of high school kids being paid $7.00 an hour.
