L Frank Baum not only wrote The Wizard of Oz, but a number of other books about Oz as well. Ozma was a character in one of the other books, but did not appear in the movie or the book by the same name.

Ozma of Oz was a character originated by L Frank Baum, but continued by Gregory Maguire in WICKED, as a title given to all of the hereditary rulers of OZ. Baum said she was a fairy left behind by the Fairy Queen Lurline to rule after she departed. This tradition was continued by Maguire, giving this story to his first Ozma and letting this legend become a belief by those that follow the religion of Lurlinism.
