About the middle of April to end of August. It is wise to get a job and earn some money so that you can afford to go back the next year.

It varies from college to college. In California, summer at a semester system college is between May and August. At a quarter system college, it is between June and September. Summer session classes are equivalent to semester or quarter classes, but in a shorter timeframe, so it is near impossible to take a "full course load" (12 or more credit hours) because there is a lot more class time.

I took a summer class that was a 4 unit class, which means in a normal quarter there are 4 hours of class per week. In the summer, there were 8-10 hours of class (don't remember exactly how much). Since there are less classes offered in the summer, there is less of a variety in times you can choose for your classes. So the longer class times, and the lower availability of classes, means it is very hard to find more than two classes that don't conflict with each other.
