Initially it was more like the Boy Scouts than a military unit that would wind up sending 8 year olds to their deaths trying to stop the Russian tanks from entering Berlin.
They were very concerned with "purity" of spirit, mind and body and had similar membership requirements as the SS did, i.e. "No Jews Allowed." They combined survival skills with physical fitness and did a pretty good job of preparing little German boys to become German soldiers as men.
It was practically mandatory, unless you were in one of "those" groups who were denied acceptance.
Baldur von Schirach, the founder, was a reputed homosexual pedophile who was hanged shortly after being found guilty at the Nurnberg trials. (sorry, no umlaut here) He enjoyed spending lots of time with impressionable young boys.
CREEP!!

The Hitler Youth was originally established in 1922 as the "Jungsturm Adolf Hitler" and served to train and recruit future members of the Sturmabteilung. It was similar to the East German "deutsche junge pioniere". I know because I was in them. Nobody cared about it. It was something you NEEDED to do and a part of your education.
Similar to the "East German young pioneers" the HJ was organized into corps under adult leaders, and the general membership comprised boys aged fourteen to eighteen. From 1936, membership of the HJ was compulsory for all young German men. The HJ was also seen as an important stepping stone to future membership of the elite Schutzstaffel (the SS)
Just to clear things up:
1945, the Volkssturm was commonly drafting 12-year-old Hitler Youth members into its ranks.

they liked them... Hitler used lots of propaganda on the kids and parents like his Nazi Christmas when his government made sure that every child had a present for Christmas during the great depression... and there were other propaganda ploys to get the adults on his side... all the parents were proud of their little nazis
