There are many factors. But to get a detailed answer you must state what exactly is wrong with your car or at least describe what is it doing when you try to start it. But if there is nothing wrong with your car and you want to know just for knowledge you'd better get into a auto mechanic class. Like I said there is too many causes to list. Have a great one!

If you left something on like your lights & gas (expecially in the winter make sure you have more then 1/4 tank or overnight when its cold, your gas freezes then when you start it in the morning it starts unfreezing thus turning into water and well, your get where it goes from there =) )

A low battery, a bad starter an alternator it could be like a needle in a haystack. Starters go out either in the winter months or the summer months. Drive in to a Jiffy Lube and they check the fluids for free. Also Auto Zone will test your battery for free as well as the alternator and the starter. They will even put it on for you....if you purchase from them.

Battery dead
Starter broken
timing off
there are any number of parts that can have a problem and lead to not starting. It depends on what kind of noise it makes when you try to start it.

Fire, ------Alternator, Starter, Requlator, Ignition switch.
Computer Related ----- Brain, Sensors,
Fuel------ Carbuerator, Fuel Injectors, Fuel Pump.
There could be several things and or a combination of them.
