2 years ago, The Sun tricked the then England manager Sven Goran Eriksson. They dressed a reporter up as an arab sheikh and plied the England manager with drinks. Then they got him on tape making a number of boasts and revelations.

When these were reported in the News of the World (the Sunday version of The Sun), the English FA quickly responded by announcing that Eriksson would stepping down as England manager.

Under Sven, England were the only European team, apart from Sweden, to reach the quarter finals in the 2002 & 2006 World Cups and the 2004 European Championships. He led England to a 5-1 over Germany in Germany and improved England's rating in the FiFA standings from 17th to 5th.

If it wasn't for the News of the World then maybe Sven would still have been in charge and England wouldn't be "having the summer off".

THE SUN'S LOYALTY IS ONLY TO THE BRITISH POUND. IT WILL DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO SELL ITS PAPER EVEN TO THE EXTENT OF UNDERMINING THE ENGLAND NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM.

I think that the British media always takes the mickey of the British fans....
I think that Sven was the worst that could happen to the English national team,...
I think that the whole naitonal team is a group of players with no talent whatsoever,
How can a team win anything significant when they score an OWN GOAL when they first played Croatia.... How can a team have relied on PURE luck in last year's world cup to reach the stage they did only because one of their opponent teams scored an own goal ?!
I think that the sooner we start facing up to these facts the sooner we will start putting together a team who will do us proud. The present team is an utter joke.

It is a tradition of Red Tops to "dig the dirt". The Sun, Star, News of the World, et al, do it all the time.

Celebrities and those who occupy positions of perceived national importance, are used to having their opinions published and followed. They are, to many, role models.

It is, therefore, incumbent on such people to act within the bounds of acceptable morality and ethics. It is, after all, a two way street.

Not only do we need to consider managerial responsibility in the case of the recent England failure, but also the culpability of the players.

There is, of course, also a tradition in English Football, stemming back to the first days of iinternational competition. The Football League has always taken precedence. As long as the "Club or Country" dichotomy exists, we shall not see consistent success in i8nternational competition.

Sven, Sven, Sven...a very good coach. Too bad England footballers no longer know how to play this game.
