It has been an empire for many years.
The original thirteen colonies were expanded by successive American governments across the whole continent by the conquest of the native peoples rather in the same way that Russia extended its empire across Asia.
The State of New York refers to itself as the Empire State and it has the Empire State Building in New York City.
The USA has a lot of smaller possessions around the world such as Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Guatanamo Bay, Diego Garcia and some of the Pacific Islands although Hawaii was made a state in the late 20th century.

America is Empire but economic empire.
If you thin why America does not have any colonies it is because she was colonie it self. America wanted to spread across to South America but Mexicans didn't allowed.
But if you look closely to these problem you will see that America does have colonies. Every country in witch she can have military camp is in some way hers colonie. Or country in witch American capital plays a major role is her colonie.
