Really, it all depends on what you want to do with your adult life. Volunteering for something you don't enjoy will only turn you off volunteering. Find something you like and volunteer in that capacity.

a senior citizen home
tutor a friend or someone who is having trouble in your class
I volunteer at a hospital as a gift shop person or a candy striper (go there and ask them)
you can also rake leaves at the cemetary and put things on graves
you can also help clean up after major events in your town
altar serving for church?
ask a town representative about volunteering for events (like holiday santa's breakfast's and stuff)
babysit for free
mow an elderly neighbor's lawn, or just visit them, tell them stories, read to them, talk to them, make their lives less lonely, good for school, good for your character, good for their lives.

well, what do you want to major in for college? volunteer in a place where its relevant to the major you want to pursue. that way, you are positive about your volunteer job and in the eyes of the colleges, you are passionate about your major and so you have better chances of getting into that college!
