For an unpublished author it is extremely difficult to find a literary agent to represent the manuscript and submit it to a reputable publishing house. As you said, many great novels are shuffled aside by agencies because their work load is maximized and, perhaps, the novel has glaring grammatical gliches in them.

Vanity publishing, as the name implies, offers book publishing at the author's expense and is easy to acquire. Any qualified literary agent or publisher would not give the slightest bit of attention to a book published through a vanity company.

Your best alternative for now is to get a current copy of the Writer's Digest--either at your library or bookstore--and find a literary agent most likely to accept your genre.

Just because your story may be flawless and written well for a reader does not mean it will be accepted. Agencies have time-tables, schedules, and certain topics they feel compelled to offer the reader. It's all about money--if the book will sell.

Hi Kate:
In response to our question about writing a book. Investigate who you are submitting your proofed copy and submit to more than one company after you find out if they are a real publishing company --with all the fraud I would suggest just sending only partial to the co's and the company that are interested will contact you to find out if they want to read on and are serious for a proposal. I found that when you do things like this it is almost a positive that you patent your book first. I took law so I know one thing that might help. Legally you can mail yourself the entire book to yourself and do not open it so if ever in question you have a free patent and evidence that this is your book and no one can claim or copy your idea for the book. I hope you the best and hope that this will help a little bit.
