My dream has always been to make it to medical school but.....?

..... I am afraid I am not bright enough.

I am in the 10th grade and my average is 87%, and I feel like I don't have a chance, with med school being so competitiveand all.

My mom is a doctor and I feel like an idiot next to her, I know she is older and has lots more educations but she bugs me about her 94% average that she got in grade 10.


With my grades, do I at least have a chance of getting into pre-med courses?


(ya, I know, every kid in the world has pretty much wanted to be a doctor at some point but I couldn't see myself being anything else other than a doctor or maybe nurse. I've pretty much scoured all my moms old textbook and loved every minute of it)

sorry not pre med, a good school in which i can get my prerequisites and do something else (like english or classics)

The difference between and 87% and a 97% has nothing to do with intelligence. It has everything to do with self-discipline. I'm going to guess that you have never attended any kind of training that instructs you how to develop good studying skills, so I'll tell you the bottom line....repetition, repetition, repetition. There, I saved you a $1,000!!!

Seriously, read something once and you might recall it. Read something twice and you probably will recall it when you need it. Read something three or four times and you'll recognize it every time. The amount of information thrust at you over the next ten years cannot possibly be memorized. But you can become familiar with it...through repetition, repetition, repetition.

Just as an FYI, the best physicians are not the ones who always wanted to be a doctor. The best physicians are the ones who needed to be doctors.

You can do it. And you have a good grade average. Also you have a lot more to learn than your Mother did when she was your age. Everyday they come up with something new in school that you have to learn. If your Mother were in school today her grade average might not be as high as it was when she was in school years ago. Just do the best that you can do and go from there. You are no dummy with a grade average of 87%!! If being a doctor is in your heart then go for it!!

Sounds like your Mom needs to lay off. You can try asking her what classes she took in 10th grade and see how they compare. Math and science classes are constantly getting accelerated.
Assuming you live in the US, pre-med isn't even an actual major. It is a declaration that you intend to apply to med school after graduation and are taking the courses required for that. You will need to major in something with similar course requirements (Biology, Physiology, ect) for your Bachelors. Med schools could also care less what your grades in High School are. Get into college. Do well (3.5+). Get a good MCAT score.

Medical schools don't count high school grades for entry. If you do well in your undergraduate, you should not have a problem getting in somewhere. Your SAT tests will give you an idea of your ability to take a test. Just go to college, get excellent grades and then apply to med school. BUT make sure you take chemistry and biology so you can do well on the MCAT. Best wishes~!

Well you have the passion for it, so why don't you look at the other options. like try and get a traineeship or something like that?
