As the Walmarts are remodeling their stores, they are closing out some departments and the fabric depts are gone. Happened to 6 Walmarts in our area already, one more to go. They have discontinued lots of stuff, I hate it, I can't find anything anymore because they have rearranged everything, and even the employees don't know where things are. I am boycotting Walmart as much as possible, I don't need their new higher prices and new attitude. They didn't put it the fabric on sale either, as the stores were remodeled, it just went away.

Another truly amazing post. I really don't believe peoples logic. People protest Wal-Mart’s expansion, criticize their products, but when they decide to discontinue something or make changes to better the store even more people climb out of the woodwork to protest. #1 Wal-Mart has done their homework. They don't just decide things on a whim. Companies sell products for profit. Yes they are providing you with something you "want" (yes fabric is a want not a need), but they wouldn't be providing the service if they are not making money. #2 There is a business saying that goes "just because there are cars in the parking lot doesn't mean your making money". The fabric dept may look busy but that doesn't mean they are taking in the profit. #3 Wal-Mart does take loses on some products. I can tell you first hand that one of the posters above does not know what he is talking about when he says they make 47% profit over cost. They take losses on many good but make up for it with others. Also Wal-Mart's philosophy is to sell quantity at low cost. Instead of marking up like other retailers, Wal-Mart lowers the price and takes a smaller profit but in return sells more. #4 Petitions and writing to the company is not going to solve anything. Wal-Mart has done their research and looked at the data. Fabrics and Crafts is a large dept and doesn't attract many shoppers, and doesn't give much to profit. #5 Maybe they will be expanding their selections of home fashions so you can find something already made cheaper than making it yourself. Oh and as a PS...Don’t get me started on eliminating layaway. What a waste it was to even have in the first place. Most stores had 70% or more in returns and cancellations. What a waste of space and employee power. Here is an idea....save up the money and then go shopping. Wow what a concept.

One in W.VA the other in VA. They are not reordering supplies not having any sales and certainly are not telling the sales people about it as it is close to Christmas and why spoil their holidays. They remodeled [actually just shifted things around and made more isle space] the store and have kept smaller items [for how long?] such as pins needles and some thread So it is not only the fabric but craft supplies, decorating etc. Sucks is one word to use.

an employee here says our fabric department is closing too. this is odd because the people around here still sew and there are no other fabric stores here in town. and don't drive to the city where wal-mart apparently will keep its fabric department. and there are many fabric stores there in the city. go figure. i guess it's all bottom line to them.

Our local Wal-Mart has drastically reduced its supply of yarn. What few selections are left are not that great. The fabric section seems to have gotten bigger, tho, unless it is the way they have everything arranged now. What really stinks is there are no other local stores around that carry yarn, unless you want to pay like 10/skein for speciality yarn.

The reason they closed it is because they couldn't get their suppliers to undercut the prices, to be able to sell lower than the fabric stores. It's a GOOD thing. It means they couldn't find anyone willing to use slave labor or poisonous material just to give us an artificially low price, long enough to knock out your local fabric store.

I don't know of any reductions. They're either throwing it away or selling out to a salvage operation.

There are two Wal-marts by me... one stopped carrying fabric and their selection just got smaller and smaller - never saw them put it all on sale. Although the other store seems to have a peculiarly larger selection now!

I have one walmart near me and the fabric has not gone on sale as yet. The cross stitch supplies disappeared, and I assume they returned the stuff to the manufacturer. I agree with kacky. I wish the entire line of stores would go broke.
