Again we hear the muslim whine that anti-terror laws are unfair to "moderate" muslims. Well how pray tell are we supposed to tell the moderates from the radicals? The moderates haven't exactly distinguished themselves by being outspoken against terrorism. Oh, they have an excuse. They say they're too scared to speak out. Seems like there are only two kinds of muslims. Those who are too scared to speak and those who are brave enough to blow themselves up. And us infidels are just supposed to "wait and see" to find out which is which. In the meantime we should give all of them the benefit of the doubt. But wouldn't it be more prudent under these circumstances to *distrust* all muslims until they prove themselves otherwise? And if that hurts the feeling of these so-called moderates, maybe that will be the incentive for them to find their lost courage.

I agree. If the so-called moderate Muslims don't condemn the extreme Muslims and their activities publicly, it's the same as condoning their actions. This past summer, I saw a woman who was wearing a black burka (covered everything but her eyes), with a big backpack on and waiting for the subway in NYC. EVERYONE, including myself, moved away from her. Better safe than sorry! I continued to see her throughout the summer (she was probably a student taking a summer course at my university)...and every time, people moved away from her. I never got used to it. It's like someone wearing a ski mask during the summer. Who cares about political correctness and "offending" the Muslims. She sure scared a lot people. She offended us.

I think we have to be careful about how we approach this. There was an episode of Law and Order that I thought was just brilliantly done and really got me thinking about the whole issue.

It opened with a video which made it look like an American group had made a copycat video of the ones the terrorists made in Iraq, and slit the throat of a Muslim man. They begin to investigate, and talk to the man's brother in law. They run a voice match test on the video and it reveals that the man's brother in law, a Muslim, was the voice on the video. It is discovered that he is part of a terrorist cell and made the video to make it look like Americans had done the video. They find out that he was working with a number of other men in the terrorist cells to get bombs to blow up targets in New York. The man who they killed went to a few of the meetings but disliked the idea of using bombs and planned to tell the authorities, so the brother in law killed him to silence him.

The authorites question the Imam at the local mosque where the men attended. He is accused of letting them use the mosque for the meetings. Jack McCoy, the District Attorney, basically threatens to press charges against him if he won't testify against the terrorist. He testifies, it is revealed that he has nothing to do with the terrorists but he becomes the prosecutors star witness and gets him convicted.

The terrorist and the Imam exchange words in Arabic in the courtroom. The next day, we learn that someone threw a brick with the word "TERRORIST" through the Imam's window and the Mosque had been firebombed. Jack McCoy goes down to the Mosque. He apologizes for the trouble it has caused, then asks what the terroist said to him. He basically called him a traitor and told him to go to hell. McCoy then asks what the Imam said back. He responds "God Bless the United States of America"

What about extremist Christians? How many wars have there been over Christianity because Christians believed they were doing the 'Will of God'. Get off your high horse. People like you create racism, fights, gangs bullying and widespread fear. And then we blame THAT on the muslims. Distrusting all muslims is ridiculous. That is like distrusting every pastor, bishop or priest in case they are a paedophile. Just as muslims, they on the whole are good people but there are a few bad people who spoil the reputation they all have.

I know lots of muslims who have spoken out against extremism and terrorism. However these people haven't been in leadership positions.

I think we actually need to reach out to muslims, buddhists, hindis, everyone. By segregating them more, as questions and comments like this do, you will create more isolation, more distrust, more violence. By reaching to them and treating them as human beings as you would anyone else, they will feel included and it will eliminate their feelings of alienation.

Alienating them will only make them want to punish those who have alienated them.

It is acceptible now to persecute muslims in such a way, just wait until Christians are added to that list.
Just to give you a clue, freedom isn't lost by you disagreeing with the laws, it is lost because you feel it is justified, until you wake up one day and you have none.

A view that could have been present in the 1930's:
"Well how pray tell are we supposed to tell the hardworking jews from the squatters?"

sounds familiar don't it?

We could make them all wear arm bands with the crescent and star. We could force them all to move into ghettos.

OR WE COULD ACT LIKE AMERICANS AND NOT FRIGGIN NAZIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When you think you know anything about someone because of how they look, you are a bigot. when you think you should be able to control the lives of people you have prejudged in this way, you are a sociopath.
