They existed to overthrow the Nazi regime and they helped smuggle many Jews and other persecuted people to safe havens. The French Resistance was filled to the brim with true heroes.

Their primary role was to harass the occupying troops as much as possible. There was a regime that collaborated with the Nazis, based in Vichy, but the Resistance would nor co-operate with them. They helped rescue British airmen, kept in contact with Britain using illcit radios and were generally a pain in the a-s to the occupying forces. Many paid with their lives. Hope this helps.
