currently I am reading "Wicked - the life and times of the Wicked Witch of the West" by Gregory McGuire. It is pretty good.
- but my fave author - well I have lots - start with Diana Gabaldon - "Outlander"
- Stephen King - "The Dark Tower Series" starts with "The Gunslinger" but I like all of his books
- Janet Evanovitch - she has a series of 13 books - Stephanie Plum is a female bounty hunter and the first in that series is "One for the Money" - they are all light funny reading
- Sue Grafton - she has a series of books about a female detective "Kinsey Millhone" and her books all start with a letter of the alphabet - the first is "A is for Alibi"
- I also like Anne Rice,
Kurt Vonnegut
Iaasc Asimov
I don't like Dean Koontz very much but his book "Odd Thomas" was really really good
just too many to mention

Best book I've read recently was 'Pride and Prejudice'. Odd story behind this - I tried to read it over the summer but couldn't get through it. Then my history teacher assigned 'The Jungle' and, well, I needed something to banish the mental images of rotting and diseased meat, so I picked the book I had that was as far away from that as possible. And it turned out that it earned a place on my favorites list. I love the characters particularly - Elizabeth is so easy to identify with, and of course, Mr. Darcy is, well, Mr. Darcy, and the others are just brilliantly realistic (if occasionally with amplified characteristics).
Anyway, my favorite author is probably J.R.R Tolkien.

Too broad a question! I have favorite authors from different genres.
I am currently re-reading the Saga of Recluce series by L.E. Modesitt, Jr. I love the series. My favorite fantasy series would probably be The Elenium (book one is The Diamond Throne), by David and Leigh Eddings.
From the horror genre, Dean Koontz or Stephen King.
On the Sci-Fi side, I love the Incarnations of Immortality series from Piers Anthony.

The best book I've read this year is 'The Wild Places' by Robert MacFarlane and he is currently my favourite author.
Not only is this is book a vivid and exciting journey around the most beautiful and wild parts of Britain, but also and more importantly a moving and deeply philosophical evocation of all our needs to experience the peace and satisfaction that a deep relationship with the natural landscape, wildlife, trees and the seasons, brings us .

If you like reading non-fiction, about what goes on nowadays - I recommend these two -
1) "Under the Loving Care of the Fatherly Leader"
written by Bradley K. Martin
2) "Rogue Regime"
written by Jasper Becker
These two well-written books give an insight about the North Korean Government.
Fiction?
Try all the books written by Clive Cussler.
The hero is Dirk Pitt, with his sidekick Al Giordino. These are well-written.

I've just finished 'Piece of Cake' by Cupcake Brown and its the most amazing story. Its a true story of her life, from when she was taken into care aged 11, ended up turning tricks on the streets and taking drugs everyday from the age of 11 to her mid twenties. She turned her life around and is now a lawyer. Its just such an inspiring story. And it still manages to keep a degree of humour throughout. My favourite author EVER is Paulo Coelho. He is just awesome. Once you read the Alchemist, you have to read his whole back catalogue. I love him, my life would have been so much more different if I hadnt have discovered his works.

The best recently was "The Boy in The Striped Pyjamas" by John Boyce. You really have to read it - it is a simply written but simply quite stunning book that you will remember for a long time afterwards.
The best I've ever read (I know you didn't ask but you've got me going now) is "Le Grand Meaulnes" by Alain Fournier - a beautifully haunting coming-of-age story in a French village.
Fournier is still my favourite author but he wrote only one novel.
