According to Red Book they're not. The 1958s are worth more. Who told you it was the other way around?

In circulated grades they are worth about the same. The 1959 edges out the 1958 in high mint state grades. In MS-64 red the 1958 trends for $2, in the same grade the 1959 trends for $10. In reality I am not so sure why for both were heavily saved due to one being the last year of a type the other the first year. the 1958 had a mintage of 252,525,000 and the 1959 had 609,715,000. I think the trends pricing is way to high for the 1959. I bet they don't sell at that price or even close. Both dates are just to common and not old enough yet. A lot of times price guides and reality are not even close.

There is no real difference in value between the two years except maybe at very high end mint state grades and that is probably more of a supply vs demand thing. 1958 was the last year for the wheat back design and 1959 was the first year for the memorial design on the reverse. Otherwise they are the same.
