Picture this if you will, there is a race, there is a very fast runner, a person that likes to jog (he'll put in some effort but he doesn't want to over exert himself), then a person that has a bad back he'll hobble around the track as best he can, and the last guy he is depressed he is siting on the starting line (he figures why bother running this stupid race)
Ok the whistle blows, and runner takes off like a shot the jogger is trailing far behind, the man limping is way behind hobbling along and the depressed person is still sitting there doing nothing.
Now this is a fair race with fair rules so when the race is over everyone gets first place!
Now the runner says hey why did the jogger get first place I was running out there giving it my all and he won first place too! Next time I wont bother to run so fast! The jogger says hey why did the limping man get first place I was jogging along I put in some fair effort and he gets first place to gesh! Next time I'll walk! The limping man says hey why did the depressed man guy get first place at lest I made it around the track! The depressed guy just sat there, next time I am not going to even bother!
Eventually no one runs around the track because no one believes it is worth it, everyone is depressed and doing nothing but just siting at the starting line. They all feel worthless but all are still getting first place just for being there. Because to be fair everyone wins! ;-)
Truthfully when things are fair everyone loses, because everything will sink to the lowest common denominator. That isn't fair to everyone because it kills off enthusiasm and a sense of accomplishment, when you kill that off you kill off will and self worth as well. That is what making it fair for all leads to.
A far better idea is honesty for all, but that is what our laws try to do at least.
If everyone has an honest opportunity with (no discrimination and no cut throat business practices) but good honest competition that is a better model for society.

It's in our nature to forgive. Even when we have been wronged and confront the perpetrator, we tend to pull up a little bit. It's what makes us human. And human according to me is not about the race but the ability for compassion and empathy.
