This is the assignment.
Measure the height of your computer monitor to the nearest tenth of a centimeter or sixteenth of an inch. Measure the width of your monitor as well. Use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the length of the diagonal of your monitor. How do I measure it the the sixteenth of an inch? And how would I apply the Pythagorean Theorem to this?

I found the height which is 14 inches
The width is 15.5 inches

so to find the length of the diagonal, you just use Pythagorean Theorem: a^2 + b^2 = c^2

so you found the height (a) and width (b), so to find the diagonal (c), just plug in the numbers:

(14^2) + (15.5^2) = c^2
196 + 240.25 = c^2
436.25 = c^2

but you need to find c, so take the square root of 436.25:
so, c= 20.88659857
or about 20.90 inches.

hope this helps (:

Let the height of your monitor be x, and the length be y. These can be represented as two legs of a right triangle, assuming the top and the side are roughly perpendicular. Since you measured the height to be 14 in. and the width to be 15.5 in., use the Pythagorean Theorem, plugging in for x and y (the variable you assign to each doesn't matter). So, take the square root of of 14^2 + 15.5^2, or the square root of 436.25, which is about 20.887 in., the length of the diagonal.

Pythagorean Theorem:

(diagonal)^2 = (width)^2 + (height)^2 =

= 240.25 + 196 = 436.25

approximatly: diagonal = 21
