WWI raised the stakes of war to unbelievable levels and invented entirely new, terrifying ways to die in battle. Poison gas, tanks (though admittedly none were that great), machine guns, the use of war planes (though again, none were very good), flame throwers (primarily a German weapon), submarines, and, oddly enough, barb wire.

Long story short, killing became meaner, faster, and more widespread. This was the first war whose casualties soared into the millions, helped in large part due to trench warfare and the killing machines introduced on both sides.
