It's so hard to say in advance because you just don't know how big or small your baby will be. Our daughter was small when she was born (6lbs, 12oz) and she used the newborn diapers for a LONG time. I know lots of people whose babies grew out of the newborns before they even finished the first package though. I would say to have a couple of bags of the newborn and size 1 diapers on hand just to be safe. If you don't use the second bag of newborn you can always return it and get more size 1. That way you will have at least a little bit of time before you have to run to the store for more no matter how big your baby is.
That being said, don't stress too much about it because running to the store for more diapers isn't that big of a deal when it comes down to it. Try to be prepared, but don't feel like you have to have enough stuff to last you for months. You will need to go shopping for food, if nothing else, at some point in the first couple of weeks that you bring the baby home. You will manage. :)

It really depends on how big your baby is. My daughter was tiny so, she stayed in the newborn diapers for a while, but my nephew was huge ( 11 lbs) and never did fit a newborn diaper. Stocking up on the size 1 is a good idea.

get a variety of sizes, my baby was big when it was born so I only used a couple of packages of the newborn, then the size one lasted a couple of months, I just switched from size two, he was in that size for a few weeks, I basically buy papers every week so he is now 5 1/2 months so I've gone through 14 packages of size 2 diapers (pampers swaddlers) that have 80 diapers in the package, 8 packs of size 1 diapers (pampers swaddlers) that have 88 diapers in the package and 3 packs of newborn (didn't really use much of the newborn because they got small really fast, just estimating on how much packages I've bought so far.

on average a baby uses 7 diapers a day.
4 boxes of 88 count diapers from White Cloud per month is what my nephew went through.
These are so inexpensive and work great compared to others and can be bought at any Walmart.

Depends on how big the baby is. The diaper boxes have guidelines for pounds on the box.
Figure 8-10 diapers a day at first, at least.

Only buy 1 pack of newborn they grow so fast, then buy 2 or 3 of other sizes. The good thing about diapers is you can exchange them if you find you have the wrong size.

well, we just had twins and we bought about 5 bags. we went through those in 2 weeks!
we have twins so you dont need that many. size depends on how tiny or large your baby is. we got preemie because they are very tiny, but just read the weight on the bags. Also buy several different sizes. it does differ between babies, but prepare yourself for the first few weeks. you dont want to be rushing around for diapers with a little one. Good Luck!

When our little one was born, we bought one big pack of Huggies Newborn and a big box of Huggies size 1. After about three weeks our little one grew out of the newborns and into the size 1s, which was also about the time that we started running low on the newborns (we still had a few left over, which we gave to a friend who just had a little one). When it comes to diapers, you can never have too much in those first few months.
