Gentle scratching behind the ears and under the chin is almost always appreciated. I think my male cat must have been a dog in his last life. My female likes to be rubbed on the side of her face. I'm a cat owner too and all of the scratching and petting with paws, love bites, chewng gently on mt hair etc is all very gentle. I only got a little nip on the face once from a cat a long time ago and I deserved it.

I what way is this a philosophical topic of debate?
There is a cat that has come to live in my apartment because I control its food source. It is not 'mine' as it is impossible to posses another living thing. I respond how ever my body responds at the time. If my hand bats at the cat or I jump back and walk away all depends on what naturally occurs.
Why would the cat want to scratch my back? What would motivate it to do that?

Some folks aren't aware most cats like to be rubbed between their eyes. Try it on your cat.

no. when they scratch your face, let them know that you won't tolerate it, and put them down. if you hurt them or yell at them, it can lead to more problems. trust me, i'm a cat owner.
